Research
Our games and apps are based on the latest educational psychology and instructional technology research. Learning theories that guide our work include cognitive, constructivist, and social constructivist theories. In particular, we utilize and test the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, cognitive load theory, situated cognition, and distributed cognition (Lave & Wenger, 1991; Mayer, 2005; Mayer, 2001; Perkins, 1993; Sweller, 1988).
We also utilize research on gaming, intrinsic motivation, and Flow motivation to provide engaging and fun experiences for students (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975; Deci, 1973; Gee, 2003).
Each app and game we produce is tested by experts in measurement and evaluation. The testing is part of our spiral development process which includes extensive pilot testing followed by modifications based on user feedback and performance on learning measures. This cycle of testing and modifications continues until the app or game is deemed 'effective' and released to the public.
Development
Our spiral development process is an adaptation of several existing methods for creating, testing, and modifying software. Our team is composed of experts from educational psychology, instructional technology, software development, and measurement & evaluation.
The knowledge from each of these fields is combined to create educational apps and games that engage the learner and are to be effective through iterative cycles of continuous testing and improvement.
Our Evaluation Process includes examining learning, motivation, and usability. See the Venn diagram below.
